Where we come from, where we live and who we love: there’s no escaping the importance of place and identity in the 21st century. It matters how we talk about them and how we feel about them and there’s no one better placed to explore such questions than writers. This panel will look into what it means to belong, what it means to be a citizen of the world and the fascination of location.

Paul Scraton’s Built On Sand is a portrait of Berlin three decades on from the fall of the Berlin Wall. It digs into foundations of a city, once divided, still fractured and fragmented, but also celebrated as a city of artists and outcasts, teachers and construction workers. A place of tourists and refugees, and the memories of those exiled and expelled.

Deirdre Shanahan, is the author of Caravan Of The Lost And Left Behind, a book set in London and Ireland and about dislocation and becoming unanchored, the disturbance when you’re wrenched out of your environment, and the need for a home and belonging.

Gonzalo C Garcia is the author of We Are the End, a story exploring the difficulties of finding your place in the world – and also a wonderfully evocative depiction of Santiago in Chile, a place where the novel’s narrator Tomás feels so very lost…
